Padma Doree Initiative Launched to Blend Eri Silk and Chanderi for Sustainable Textile Innovation

In a significant move to strengthen India’s traditional textile ecosystem while aligning with modern sustainability goals, the ‘Padma Doree’ initiative has been officially launched as a pioneering cross-regional collaboration. The programme is spearheaded by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, aiming to bridge diverse craft traditions across the country.
The initiative brings together two of India’s most distinctive textile heritages—Eri (Ahimsa) silk from Northeast India and the intricate Chanderi weaving tradition of Madhya Pradesh. This fusion represents not just a design collaboration but a deeper integration of regional knowledge systems, materials, and craftsmanship, creating a unique fabric that combines durability with fine aesthetics.
Eri silk, often referred to as “peace silk,” is known for its eco-friendly production process, where the silkworm is not harmed. By integrating this sustainable fibre with the lightweight and luxurious Chanderi fabric, Padma Doree aims to promote ethical fashion while enhancing the value of traditional textiles in global markets.
The launch event featured a curated fashion showcase and interactive exhibitions that demonstrated the journey from fibre to finished fabric. Artisans from both regions participated in live demonstrations, highlighting the collaborative design and production process behind the initiative. This not only provided visibility to traditional techniques but also encouraged direct engagement between craftspeople and audiences.
Officials emphasized that Padma Doree is more than a textile project—it is a step toward building a sustainable, artisan-centric ecosystem.
